Collagen Injections

Collagen injections are often used to provide a plumper and smoother appearance in targeted areas in the skin. Collagen is a protein that is naturally found in the skin’s dermis and in other connective tissues. Collagen keeps the skin tight and healthy encouraging new cell growth.  Collagen forms a support structure for the skin but as a person grows older, the structure weakens and losses its elasticity causing it to sag and fold. Exposure to the sun can also cause the weakening of collagen. This is the reason why collagen injections are developed. Because of a collagen diminishes with age, those who want to still look young can get reinforcement from collagen injections.

Collagen injections are relatively safe.  However, like any other medical procedures, collagen injections may have some risks.  Some know risks of collagen injections are the following:

  • Bleeding
  • Bruising
  • Swelling
  • Rashes
  • Redness
  • Infection
  • Temporary facial muscle weakness
  • Lumpy areas

The risk of the use of collagen injections may be higher for those with existing medical conditions.  It is important for patients to consult with the doctor first before getting collagen injections.

Facial filer treatments like collagen injections have undergone major developments through the years.  From collagen injections, Hyaluronic acids like Juvederm and Restylane are used.  There are many reasons why hyaluronic acids are now preferred over collagen injections.

  • Shelf life of collagen injections does not last long when compared with Juvederm and Restylane.
  • Collagen injections need to be tested first for allergic reaction. Most collagen products require skin testing for allergic reactions, while Juvederm and Restylane do not need such skin tests. The development of skin irritations may have 1 to 3 % chance with collagen injections
  • Fillers used for collagen injections came from bovine (cow) skin or human cadaver. Newer products are superior to collagen injections because they are made from hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance that has a hydrating effect on the skin while replenishing its natural volume.
  • For the most part, products like Juvederm and Restylane can have the same effect as collagen injections at the same price point
