The appearance of enlarged pores is a concern for everyone. Some, however, are reminded of their pores more often as they appear larger than the average sized pores. However, there are ways to greatly reduce the appearance of enlarged pores.
When a pore becomes clogged by dirt and bacteria, oil within the pore builds up, which causes the pore’s walls to dilate to make room. Genetics and age are the two main contributors that cause large pores.
In general, people who have inherited naturally oily or thick skin are likely to have larger pores, since their oil glands are more active and thus, need a bigger opening for releasing oil. There are benefits to this type of skin as skin ages, since oily skin retains moisture which can help counteract drying and wrinkling.
As people age, collagen begins to break down, and skin begins to lose elasticity as people get older. This causes pores to dilate because the skin tissue has become more relaxed with age.
One contributor to aging skin is sun damage, which also causes pores to look bigger. Sun damage causes inflammation, and the thickening of the flared-up skin cells causes tiny cells to collect around the edge of the pore, making the pore look bigger.
Cleansing the pores of the debris, excess oil, and bacteria helps to stop pores from expanding to accommodate for the build-up.
