Patients who have painful varicose veins that result from leaking valves and/or reflux into superficial veins are candidates for a procedure called endovenous radiofrequency ablation.
Endovenous radiofrequency ablation is a minimally invasive, sterile, office-based procedure used to destroy poorly functioning saphenous veins in the thigh and/or leg to improve vein circulation of blood out of the legs and back to the heart.
The skin overlying the vein is numbed, and a catheter is directed up to the top part of the vein in the groin or knee. The device used to perform this procedure is known as the Covidien Closure Fast System; it is a commercially available product used to specifically for this purpose. Diluted numbing medicine, called tumescent anesthesia, is injected all around the veins to be treated.
The ablation catheter tip is visualized with the help of an ultrasound machine, and the catheter is heated to a controlled temperature, for a controlled period of time, in order to destroy the lining of the vein along the treated segments.
Sixty percent of varicose veins will decompress and be noticeably less visible following this procedure. Additional veins that do not compress that are still causing pain will be treated with either sclerotherapy or microphlebotomy. Dr. Goldstein can discuss treatment of these veins at your appointment.
